The importance of standards in Europe

January 15, 2019 wordenvie 0

Standards are important because they level the European single market and enable individual companies to sell to 27 countries. Governments develop standards First of all, governments agree on fundamental standards and by doing so they set the playing field for companies to trade. Then businesses come in and develop their products based on these.

Are we becoming a country of bigots?

I have spent a lot of time justifying staying in the European Union but I worry about the motivations for voting to leave the European Union. Are we becoming a country of bigots?

The definitive text on brexit

December 28, 2018 wordenvie 0

I want to write the definitive text on Brexit that would convince the other half of the electorate why we should be in the EU. The one great banger that would resolve everything, convince everyone, reverse this awful decision and take us back to the productive era before Brexit, before we were spending our time and energy talking about it.

A call for centrist democratic politics

I don’t like the names of the current political parties in the UK: Liberals: don’t like the name, it implies that they are liberal, anything goes. It allows the right to claim the moral high ground on law and order, although the rule of law is an essential component of democracy and order an essential ingredient of civilised society.

Proportional representation

Proportional Representation (PR) is more democratic than the first-past-the-post system. Let’s say three candidates are standing in your area, Liberal, Conservative and Labour. Only one candidate can win. However, if 30% of the population vote for the Liberal candidate, that 30% will be effectively unrepresented.

Positive immigration or the road to Fascism?

August 30, 2018 wordenvie 0

It seems that far too many have been tempted to fall into the easy reaction that it’s all the fault of foreigners. Proud of their country, feeling a strong association with it, whether British or French, so-called model citizens bolster their own inadequacy and insecurity by associating themselves with other citizens under the banner of upholding the values of their country.

Immigration policy contributing to European security

January 8, 2017 wordenvie 1

Peace in Africa might be seen as a solution to racism in Europe – the argument goes that racism is a reaction to, but not created by, immigration. And yet immigration comes from African and Middle Eastern countries in difficulty. It follows then that racists are heartless people who care not to help their fellow humans.

social services

Only the State can run social services

December 31, 2016 wordenvie 0

What distinguishes left and right and what is the balance between them. Why are political issues are so divisive? I am drawn to the left because I believe that certain services and projects such as education, health, infrastructure and defense can only be achieved by government.

Society evolves with or without immigration

December 31, 2016 wordenvie 0

Despite having written on the economic benefits of immigration and the mixity of cultures, I wonder what is the impact of countries taking in so many people, the changing demographics if immigrants do not speak the national language and the change in balance of local culture.
